WHY READING COACHING?

Reading is fundamental to independency & life success

It is a fundamental principle of equity that all students deserve access to quality education. While school test scores are not a perfect representation of quality education, they are an indicator of performance relative to accepted academic norms. Today, based on this indicator, many black students in St. Louis do not have enough or equal access to schools with a track record of preparing students to meet state standards on standardized school tests.

Schools, where students do not meet standards, are struggling to prepare children to succeed in life.  When teachers begin a school year with students who have not mastered skills they should have learned in earlier grades, they don’t get to teach at their grade level, impacting students' morale and effectiveness.

We will focus mainly on students’ grades from kindergarten to third grade. Today, 67% of students and 82% of low-income students can't read at grade level by the end of third grade. That's when you are supposed to go from learning to read to reading to learn. It's America's number one education crisis and we want to partner with schools and families to reverse these statistic.

Our Program Focus.

1. Reading Fundamentals.

This will consist of letters, phonics, sight words, and sentence structure for beginners. Every student will be assessed and we will take the time to identify the type of reading help he or she needs to improve fluency, comprehension, and reading competence.

2. Building Self-Esteem and Confidence.

Tutoring helps identify and manage any learning difficulties students may face resulting in an improved attitude toward school and learning. The one-on-one teaching that tutoring provides can help identify any issues that may get overlooked in a large classroom setting. When students feel more confident in their ability to succeed in school, their overall confidence will increase. The tools learned in personalized tutoring boost students’ self-esteem and confidence as they become more successful students.

3. Principles of Neuroscience.

Most tutors tend to focus only on the externals of learning or what we call content. This refers to the content that is in the textbook or what teachers usually cover in the classroom.  This is an important aspect of tutoring and learning, but, alone, it is incomplete. The principles of neuroscience will help students concentrate, regulate their emotions, and retain information. Creating neural structures in long-term memory is what levels the playing field so that a person with a low-capacity working memory can perform just as well as, or even better than, a person with high-capacity working memory.

4. Relationship-Building.

Building strong relationships with students is key to boosting achievement. So it’s no surprise that tutoring programs that pair students with a consistent tutor for the duration of the program deliver better results. When tutors meet regularly with students, they have the best opportunity to get to know those individual learners and develop a deeper understanding of their strengths and weaknesses. Research also indicates that when students have positive relationships with their tutors, they’re more motivated, have better attitudes, and feel empowered to succeed.

MORE ABOUT OUR PROGRAM

K-3RD IS LEARNING TO READ AND K-12TH IS READING TO LEARN.

Literacy and Hope teaches kids to read by providing 45 minutes to 1 hour of reading intervention coaching 1-2 times/week. As your child progresses, our trained reading coaches will adjust your child’s learning plan as needed, so that reading is challenging and fun — not frustrating. Our coaches share instant feedback with students, families, and teachers. We will reward progress, so you’ll see bigger smiles and scores.

We will partner with your child's teacher and school to ensure that we are coordinating our efforts effectively.

Our reading intervention curriculum focuses on the science of reading and our reading coaches are well-versed in today’s teaching methods. In fact, our coaches are professional coaches, educators, retired educators, and reading specialists. Many of our students are behind in grade level and we want to get to grade level as quickly as possible so having the right staff matters.

We will work with individual families, schools, youth organizations, and after-school programs to reach as many students as possible.

KIDS CANNOT LEARN IF THEY HAVE NOT LEARNED TO READ!
