Literacy and Hope Student Profile

Current Student’s Highlights

At Literacy and Hope, we recognize the significant literacy hurdles that some of our students currently face, including two third graders, a first grader, and a kindergartener testing at a pre-kindergarten level, alongside a second grader, a third grader, and a sixth grader struggling with blending larger words and spelling.

The urgency of providing tailored literacy support within our community cannot be overstated, as these difficulties hinder their academic growth and confidence. In our journey towards fostering literacy, we are witnessing remarkable progress among our students with just 10 sessions in 2024.  For example, one of our second graders recently tackled the challenging word “transatlantic” independently. Initially hesitant, he exclaimed, “I can’t read that,” but with gentle encouragement to “use your tools,” he successfully decoded the word, embodying the power of perseverance and the effectiveness of our evidence-based techniques. This experience is a testament to the gradual yet impactful nature of learning; while it may take time, the students are showing significant RETENTION of material. After the Thanksgiving break, we were overjoyed to see that they had not only remembered what they learned but also continued to build on it. Our third grader, who is still mastering her letters, is also making incredible strides. She is gaining confidence as she learns high-frequency words and develops her phonemic awareness.

Each child’s journey is unique, and our commitment at Literacy and Hope is to tailor an individualized program that specifically addresses their areas of opportunity. Through thorough assessments and collaboration with local schools, we identify the best strategies to help each student thrive. Unfortunately, some students have not attended school regularly, so their success is not as pronounced as others. To cater to the diverse learning needs of our students, we utilize three different curriculums, ensuring that every child receives the support they deserve. We strive to provide every student with the tools necessary for success.
